Timor Leste & India

Developing Ties With India

Timor Leste has a commitment to develop and increase its links with India. To that end, a network has been established within the University to promote and co-ordinate activity related to those regions.

Developing Ties between India & Timor-Leste

India and Timor Leste share warm and friendly relations based on shared commitment to the values of democracy and pluralism. India was one of the early countries to establish relations with Timor Leste. The visits of both the president of Timor Leste to India and India president to Timor Leste symbolizes further strengthening of bilateral relations between two countries.
Both Timor Leste and India opened their respective embassies in Dili and New Delhi which indicates stronger diplomatic growth.

The Indo–Timor Relation

Relations between East Timor and India date back to the early modern period. There are many Indian entrepreneurs, and others involved in trading and the restaurant business. Some members of the community have achieved prominence in the country such as former Defence Minister Roque Rodrigues. Manuel Longuinhos was a Prosecutor General and the first-ever surgeon in East Timor. There are also a few prominent Indian ecumenical and business families. Several East Timorese students study at Father Muller’s educational institutions in Mangalore, Karnataka. Additionally since 2024 as Indian students have started pursuing their medical education at Timor Leste and simultaneous entry of Indian business community, it is expected the cooperation and relation would enhance further.
